Attendance.

What was effective about the cross design was the ability to designate appropriate groupings of spacial requirements together and separate from other groups, and have a central meeting point at the middle. My thesis was on the importance of open space design in a school to evoke constructive criticism and create a design hub, were ideas would naturally spread to each other, creating more innovative architects.

This lecture hall takes inspiration from the Chicago Public Library. The stage sinks into the ground, and students fill in from one side, and take seats on the marble slabs. This is intended for short and concise lectures, and also doubles as a "stand" during gallery exhibitions.

There is a lift that extends up, lifting students to the library and student office space, as well as for staff and academics to get to their designated area. Lift was designed to lay flat on the floor, so the space could double as a gallery space.

Student meeting rooms, library and computer labs. As well as a general congregational area.

The bridge was an interesting part of the design process. At first this was the initial draft for the bridge, but it seemed too much like the Sydney Opera House (the sails), and not forward thinking enough

This idea came after, sort of a train that would take advantage of gravity. Hydrolic lifts would push and lower one side, leaving the balance of gravity to move the students from their architecture school to the NIDAS building in style.

In it's own way, the bridge itself becomes a "moving element" in the way it ferry's students across the road.

Robie House / Frank Lloyd Wright. Sketch Up.

My group chose the Robie House, and decided to modify the plan. What was interesting about this plan was how a big open space could be divided into smaller sections, while each separate element was still in the same room. This idea sticks with my mashup thesis, and I attempted to reconcile this with my plan.

Imagining as a section

The exploration of the Robie house lead me to attempt to incorporate those ideas into my own plans, notably paying attention to circulation

The only downside was the limitations of the geography of the site, and the restriction of the road.

The flow of movement would enter through the gallery and lecture space first, and then move forwards into a student focused center. Obviously studio and workshop were to be separate from the library, computer labs and meeting spaces (the latter being more public spaces)

Two Point Perspectives. Moving Element

Moving element ideas:

A door that opens like a flower.

Student meeting rooms that would rise from the ground. Convenient should the space be needed for other things.

A studio space that had it's own "sun roof". More wishful thinking from architecture students who get bogged down in stuffy studio spaces.

18 Perspectives. Mash Up

No Blank Spaces //

The concept of the open plan had noble beginnings in architecture. When we embrace a truly collaborative process, t’s about what you do and what you contribute. If walls are barriers to success, let’s tear them down. The possibilities are endless, with natural light, flexible space, and freedom from oppressive walls and rooms. Open plans promote the values this layout represents: I have a better pulse for what’s going on because I sit in the middle. The critique is a corrective step in the process that allows different ways of thinking to reach common ground In creative environments that thrive on interaction and learning from colleagues. Communication, ideation and collaborative resonance are the keys that mitigate the risk of completely missing a project’s ultimate goals. The positive aspects of open plans will optimize the office for different kinds of collaborative work. It should be conversational, both giving and taking, again in the interest of collaboration. Often times the thing that turns a hunch into a real breakthrough is another hunch that’s lurking in somebody else’s mind. Open-concept offices are designed to improve workflow and communication; open layouts encourage employee interaction. Sharing our unfinished work represents transparency, collaboration, and innovation, creating bastions for creativity.

Submission

Just to make sure it's clear I've covered everything

2 SHORT TEXTS DESCRIBING THE ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS.

Siza - "Use of monolithic scale, power"

For a marker, a monolithic idea would be ideal, just something to stand out. Something that gave an idea of power and size. I used it as the base part of my two axometrics. Having it curved out evoked an idea of a large rock. That earthly base evokes the history of Aboriginal culture, being what my marker stands upon.

Scarpa - "Two separate entities coming together by interlocking"

This quote reminds of an ideal situation in history where no one culture swallowed up another, unlike the clash of cultures between Western settlers and Australian Aboriginals. This idea of reconciliation applied appropriately to my marker. The long rectangular pillar is both monolithic in scale, but interlocks with the smaller axometric underneath it. Like cables finding their way into the concrete.
